My dream of touring Kashmir being literally washed away by the Kashmir floods, my family and I changed course to Rajasthan during the puja holidays. We took a flight from Bagdogra to Delhi and then a delightful double-decker train to Jaipur, arriving at 10 pm.
The next day, we toured the pink city, with its 8 majestic gates, the Hawa Mahal and reached the Amer or Amber fort built by Raja Man Singh. The architecture, especially of the Sheesh Mahal and the Sukh Niwas that used mirrors and windows for light and an air conditioning effect respectively was fascinating to see.
We then ascended the “Cheel ka Teela” or the “hills of Eagles” in the Aravalli hills to see the less frequented Jaigarh fort built of red sandstone. The world’s largest cannon, known as the Jaivana built by Maharaja Jai Singh, is housed there. It was also an interesting fact to know that the cannon was never fired in battle, as its mere size was a deterrent to the enemy!
We next visited the world famous Jantar Mantar, but the intense heat prevented us from exploring it as completely as we would have wanted. The City Palace with the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh museum can be explored leisurely to learn the history of the Rajputs. The star feature is 2 huge silver jars weighing nearly 345 kgs each, used by the king to carry Gangajal to England! The Birla Mandir built traditionally with white marble on the foothills of the Moti Doongari hill was a calming experience. The fort on the hill built along the lines of a Scottish castle (home to the late Maharani Gayathri Devi, a princess from Cooch Behar) was tastefully lit in the twilight.
We spent a leisurely evening at the Choki Dhani resort, enjoying the native art, craft and dances of Rajasthan and then having a mouth-watering dinner from an assortment of vegetarian dishes, especially Dal-Batti-Churma, Masala Ghatta and Bajra Roti.
