हिंदू धर्म की मान्यताओं के अनुसार जब भगवान राम ने रावण का वध किया था तो लंका विजय के बाद उन्हें अयोध्या पहुंचने में 20 दिन का समय लगा था, पर जिस दिन रामचंद्र जी अयोध्या पहुंचे थे उस दिन वहां पर उनका राज्याभिषेक किया गया था और वहां के लोगों ने इस उपलक्ष्य में दीपक को जलाकर खुशियां मनाई जाएगी और तभी से दिवाली का प्रारंभ माना जाता है| परंतु इस संदर्भ में कुछ विद्वानों में मतभेद है और कुछ विद्वान दीपावली के त्योहार को इस से भी अधिक प्राचीन मानते हैं और दिवाली के पर्व का संबंध मां काली द्वारा किए गए रक्तबीज के संहार को मानते हैं, विद्वानों के अनुसार दीपावली के दिन काली मां ने एक ऐसे राक्षस का वध किया था जिसका नाम रक्तबीज था और उसके अत्याचार से संपूर्ण समाज त्रस्त था| और जब महाकाली ने उस दुष्ट राक्षस का संहार किया तब लोगों ने अपने घरों में घी के दीपक जलाए थे|

 

दीपावली क्यों मनाया जाता है 

दीपावली के साथ कई धार्मिक तथा एतिहासिक घटनाएँ जुड़ी हुई हैं | श्री राम चौहद वर्ष का वनवास पूरा कर इसी दिन अयोध्या पहुँचे थे | अयोध्या वासियों ने उनके स्वागत में दीपमालाएँ सजाई थीं | समूद्र मंथन से इसी दिन लक्ष्मी जी प्रकट हुई थीं | इसी दिन भगवन विष्णु ने उपने भक्त प्रह्लाद की रक्षा करने लिए नरसिंह अवतार लिया था | जैन धर्म के चौबीसवें तीर्थंक भगवान महावीर का परिनिर्वाण भी इसी दिन हुआ था | सिक्खों के छठे गुरु हरगोविंद सिंह जी भी मुगलों की जेल से इसी दिन मुक्त हुए थे | ये सभी घटनाएँ  इस पर्व के महत्त्व को बढ़ा देती हैं |

कैसे मनाया जाता है दीपावली

दीपावली मनाने की तैयारी कई दिन पुर से ही प्रारंभ हो जाती है | घर की साफ़-सफ़ाई करके सजावट की जाती है | पकवान बनाए जाते है | बाजार और दुकाने सज जाती हैं | विशेस रूप से मिठाई और पटाखों की दुकानों में खूब रौनक रहती है | खिल-बताशो और मिटटी के खिलौने आदि खरीदना शुभ मन जाता है | दीपावली से दो दिन पहले ‘धन-तेरस’ पर नई बर्तन खरीदे जाते है | एक दिन पूर्व ‘नरक चतुर्दशी’ के दिन भी कुछ दीप जलाए जाते हैं | इस दिन श्री कृष्ण ने नरकासुर का वध  किया था |

दीपावली के दिन का सोभा तो निराली होती है— घर-बाजार नई दुल्हन की तरह सजे होते है | संध्या का अंधेरा घिरते ही सारे घर रोशनी से जगमगाउठते हैं | लक्ष्मी-पूजन और आरती होती है | लो पटाके, फुल्झारियाँ, जलाकर अपना हर्ष प्रकट करते हैं | आतिशबाजी की जगमग से अँधेरी रात रोशन हो जाती हैं |

दीपावली के अगले दिन ‘गोवरधन पूजा’ और ‘अन्नकूट’ होता है तथा दो दिन बाद ‘भैया दूज’ होता है | बहनों अपने भाईयों को तिलक करके मंगलकामना करती हैं | दीपावली का पर्व परस्पर प्रेम और भाईचारे की भावना बढाता है | लोग एक-दुसरे को फल –मिठाई या उपहार ��ेते हैं |
